How to Fix KitchenAid Tilt Head Not Staying Locked
This has been an issue plaguing the tilt head style of mixers for years now. You add your ingredients, lower the head and lock it, then it just slips out sending ingredients flying all over the place. In this video we go over some of the reasons why this happens and how to fix it so you never have to worry about it again.
We'll be walking you through step by step on how to disassemble your mixer and replace your old lock lever with a new one. We have a full kit with everything you'll need in order to complete this project. We also sell each part individually if you only need a certain part.

We hope this video helps those of you out there that have been living with this issue for years. Since KitchenAid hasn't decided to make an easy fix for this issue, we went ahead and did it for them.
If you need any parts/upgrades/repairs on your mixer or are looking to pick one up, make sure to check out our site! We also accept mixers shipped in for repairs!

I will say, some of the steps in the process are fairly in depth and can go wrong if you don't know what you're doing, so we recommend not attempting this unless your experienced with t...

Kitchenaid Arms Wont Raise!! Fixing Bowl Raise Mechanism! KitchenAid K5A/K5SS Style
Mr Mixer… in your professional opinion what you think about this KA model; ksm50pwh. I have a friend that is considering giving it to me but not sure if it will cause problems for me since it was produced in the 2003 time frame… worried about using to make dough if the gears or motor will be able to handle it.
@@ScottL08 the ksm50 is a k5ss style unit and they are great. As long as you don't over load it it will do amazing and last a long time!
I wish I could show you how mine came brand new, it was gifted to me and sent from a major online retailer. One of the arms was sticking out of the box because it had gotten thrashed in shipping and they didn't have any real packing around the midsection of the box. I can get the bowl on fine but it's always had a wobble as well as one spot in the bowl that even a scraper leaves a couple millimeters of product on the wall of the bowl. Since it was gifted and the retailer had no brick and mortar shops I had no idea how to go about returning it. Its held up okay but we knew we may have to replace it at some point.
I had to work on one of those too. Oil leak as well. Smelled so bad…
So, did you solve the oil leak?
The oil leak is from the grease lubricating the internal gears starting to separate. Just need to clean the old grease out and regrease the mixer.
My machine jas suction cups instead of feet 🥰
Is that a solution for the commercial grade kitchenaid?
Love your videos, my guy. So much valuable information, and it's always easy to understand/follow. Your breakdown/regrease video of the Pro 500/600 was amazing. Used it as a guide to replace the planetary on the mixer at work, and my bosses love me! Thank you, bro, keep up the great shit💪🏾💪🏾
@@hotburner4859 I appreciate you!
I love your passion, dedication, and ingenuity. (Do you ship overseas?)
We do but only to a limited number of countries. Where are you located?
@@MrMixer316I'm in New Zealand. 😊
What are your thoughts on the mini?
@@minnybiker4505 they are decent. They don't sell as many, they are powerful but lack capacity. They will also be discontinued in 2026, but otherwise good units!
@@MrMixer316 interesting, thank you! I like the DC motor and smaller size seems ideal for me... But maybe the 4.5/5 qt would be OK.
@@MrMixer316 biggest thing I want to avoid is obsolescence/landfill.
This is your most complete and easy to follow instructional video yet! 🎉 Just what I needed since I dismantled this exact mixer this morning to regrease and check before gifting to my niece. You rock ❤! You make it easy for us to rebuild or refurbish KitchenAid mixers. Thank you so much for your help, instructions and assistance.🥰😁💖
Glad we can be of help 😊 and congratz on the successful regrease!
I have no idea who you are but you seem so genuine and kind. Keep up the good work friend :)
@@Billboi805 I appreciate your kind words
Ours does not lock either. Ahhh
We just recently uploaded a video going over replacing the lock lever, might be time to break it open and see what's going on! Or if you wanted to send it in we could get it taken care of.
5:11 No, the metal cutout indentation is a catch. It prevents a worn out carbon brush from going in too far and damaging the armature on the electric motor. If the notch wasn't there, the worn out carbon brush would jump out of the holder and the spring would grind the armature.
What caused the Oil Leak??
I need someone to help me with my KitchenAid mixer. The knob for the speed is hard to move!
Shoot us an email with your issue at mrmixer316@gmail.com and we can help you out.
Good as new? When it was new it wouldnt lock!
Hello, good evening, I wanted to ask you a question, I have an artisan that works perfectly empty but once I put dough on it it starts to have a hard time turning, could it be do you have any ideas.
@@pk2ccs you most likely have a bad phase board or field assembly. Resulting in low torque it should be rebuilt!
@@MrMixer316 Thank you very much for your attention and time, when you refer to a phase plate, is it in the armature or in the field
LOL I CANNOT BELIEVE you used your wife’s milk! That stuff is GOLD! and yeah, not enough fat content…
I am so excited to find you!! And these videos are fascinating. I have two mixers to send to you, (one at a time) and possibly my daughter will have one also. Thank you!

Wow….who knew
As the recent owner of a $5 Hobart KitchenAid K5-A in disrepair, I have really appreciated this series! It's made the whole thing less intimidating and I can't wait to have it up and running!
How can motor fitting
Do you know anything about the vintage 3-c? Is it worth buying used if it’s in working condition? Can replacement parts be found? Thank you
Now I know why my KA is bouncing! I think my lock (the hook) is broken. True story…I dropped it a week after I bought it.😢
Sorry to hear that 😣 Hopefully this helps with getting it fixed up though!
Small appliance repair is a lost art, resulting in a lot of waste in landfills. Maybe it should be a part of "shop" in high schools. Thankyou for providing this service!
@@jamjar5716 that's a large part of what inspires me to do what I do!
Bro I would slay a whole basket full of avocados if i could afford it lol
Oh yea they didn't last long 😂
@@MrMixer316Did they last long enough to show us that guacamole recipe?
@@TheCyclonesEye I've been trying to get more into cooking on film as I cook a ton, I will show off my guac recipe as it is what the cool kids would call bomb..
I wonder if that is what is wrong with mine. Mine has never locked but I didn't want to fight with warranty again (the first one I bought wouldn't turn on so the one I have now is already a replacement)
It's not too much to open it up and take a look! We've got some tutorials going over doing just that, and if you need help feel free to shoot us an email at mrmixer316@gmail.com!
You are a life saver!! Thank you.
Glad to be of service! 😊
The owner is probably spraying wd-40 or something similar into the machine trying to free up the lock mechanism. 😂 There's your oil leak. 😂
Yeah .. enjoying your channel.. Informative and interesting. Thanks… KCB 👍🇬🇧😁
Once again asking, what method of painting would you prefer for this type of mixer?
Powder coating is the preferred method for painting any of these mixers. There's other ways, but none that I would really recommend.
awesome info, but is there just water in your parts washer?
We used to use degreaser in the parts washer. We don't use a parts washer these days though.
Thank you! Just put this in my mixer... my head didn't want to lock but i realized i didn't have the screw down far enough!
She’s not, in fact, “locking good as new”. Because she didn’t lock when new.
WAIT MY KITCHEN AID DOESNT LOCK IN THE SAME WAY
Might be worth checking out! We've got some videos going over the disassembly that should help!
Great info. Thanks
There is also the deluxe tilthead that I've seen at Walmart that is really just an Ultra Power that doesn't say Ultra Power on it. They didn't even bother to write Deluxe on the band it's just blank or that would normally be. The quar bowl on the Tilthead can be useful for certain type of cakes where the batter expands like angel cake just gives you a little more room to work with.
Yep! I hate doing this every other year but man it keeps me going! My last one lasted 20 years until the motor died. Decided my wife deserved a Seafoam green set of appliances since that’s her favorite color. I’ll be doing 10 regrease and maintenance tasks I’m sure for this one too! Lol
20 years is pretty good! Hopefully this new set lasts that long too 🙌
*better than new
Is it worth repairing most things nowadays? Like do you make enough money from this sort of thing? Seems we've moved away from repair to replace in society. Lemme know. I love taking shit like this apart but I can't imagine anyone saying me to do it when they have an opportunity to buy a new one.
@@Gainoffuntion my repairs are better than new, I upgrade the plastic components to metal and add upgrades that aren't present on new machines as well as warranty the work.
@@MrMixer316 oh awesome. Do you have a 3d printer to make parts that aren't made in metal or able to be purchased?
@@Gainoffuntion we spec and then have stuff manufactured for us
I wish KitchenAid would give us a self-locking mechanisms that the European tiltheads have that I have observed in my name British cooking videos.
I love my 7 DC. So powerful.
They are beasts!
Thank you!
Our pleasure!
Thank you very much for this video.
@@alanajerome470 my pleasure!
They probly gonna want youto make it not lock anymore. Make cooking faster.
I let my friend borrow my mixer for her business, and now the dough hook won't come off. Is that an easy fix, or should I send it in?
There's most likely some cooking debris that dried on keeping the hook stuck on. Hopefully if you're able to clean that out well enough it'll come off. Feel free to email us at mrmixer316@gmail.com if you have any questions or need some more help.
Wow
As a chef, my Hobart and Kitchen Aid stand mixers are a valuable part of my team and I cannot wrap my head around what I see here 😭💔
